Q&A with Kerrynton:
How did you first find Pilates?
I used to live up the street from the studio and one day driving home I noticed the new Pilates Studio. What caught my attention even more was the word “Contrology”. I had been looking for a place to strengthen my personal practice and knowledge as a teacher and a contrology method studio seemed like the perfect place.
What made you want to study Pilates more seriously?
After giving contrology a real chance consistently, I experienced a lot of growth both physically and mentally from my practice. This growth added fuel to my teaching fire. I grew more curious about Pilates as a system, how it's used, the why behind exercises and the depth of the mind body connection at the foundation.
What drew you to apprenticeship at Pilates DNA?
I was drawn to apprenticeship at Pilates DNA because of the holistic approach to learning. The mentorship aspect of the apprenticeship creates the ultimate ground to learn about Pilates in its truest form. The opportunity made a lot of sense for me so I could not just be successful at knowing exercises, but a successful teacher for the body in front of me.
What has surprised you most about the classical Pilates system?
Creativity. Classical Pilates is often deemed as rigid, outdated, old school and boring. There is so much room to get creative within the system to meet the needs of the body in front of you or even your own body if you do the work and have an open mind.
What are you learning about teaching right now?
At the moment, I’m learning to teach people how to truly feel Pilates in their body. My goal is to teach clients awareness of their center and communicate the best ways to stay connected to it on an individual basis. Right now, I am soaking up all of the necessary information to sharpen my eye to accomplish that goal.
What part of the method are you most interested in at this stage of your apprenticeship?
One concept that keeps me very busy is the two way stretch. It’s much easier said than done in Pilates, but is a game changer for your practice as a student and your eye as a teacher.
What can clients expect from working with you in an apprentice session?
It is no secret by now that Pilates is a lot of hard work. However, clients can expect a safe supportive partnership that helps them find strength, balance, connection and independence through repetition.
What do you hope students begin to understand through Pilates?
I really hope that students understand the value and importance of the system. There is so much freedom in your discipline when you practice it.
What is something Pilates has taught you about yourself?
How well you do small simple things is going to show up in how you do the big things.
What are you looking forward to as you continue your apprenticeship?
For my clients, I’m most looking forward to seeing them make progress in their practice. It’s really exciting to watch someone’s hard work pay off both inside and outside of the studio. For myself, I look forward to exploring all that is possible with my mind and body through the system.
